The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario

Practising as a CA or CPA in Ontario

Do I need to join the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario?

A GAA Passport enables professional accountants to receive professional support when they are working away from home in another country covered by one of the Alliance bodies.  Your GAA Passport with the Institute does not, however, grant the use of the CA designation in Ontario.  Membership in the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario is required if you wish to use the designation "CA", "ACA", "FCA" or "CPA" in Ontario, pursuant to The Chartered Accountants Act, 2010 and The Certified Public Accountants Act.

A public accounting licence and membership in the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario is required if you wish to engage in the practice of public accounting, pursuant to the  Public Accounting Act, 2004

More information about becoming a Chartered Accountant in Ontario is available online .  You will be exempt from certain education and examination requirements if the accounting body you are associated with has a mutual recognition agreement with CICA and the provincial CA institutes, but you may need to obtain additional accounting experience in an approved training office in Ontario, or if you wish to be licensed to practise public accounting in Ontario, additional public accounting experience under the supervision of an Ontario licensee.  You will also be required to take the CA Reciprocity Examination (CARE).
