Core-Knowledge Exam (CKE)

2010 CKE's:

The examinability date for material for the January and May 2010 CKE is September 1, 2009.  The coverage will be based on the Competency Map for the 2009 UFE.  IFRS will, therefore,  be examinable at the  level set out in the Competency Map for the 2009 UFE.  This means students are responsible for IFRS as outlined in the UFE Candidates Competency Maps Appendix A for the 2009 UFE.   Candidates should also be aware of significant differences between Canadian GAAS and ISA's and be able to explain these differences at a Level C. The CASs come into effect for audits of financial statements for periods ending on or after December 14, 2010 and will not be examinable on the January and May 2010 CKE.

The CKE
The CKE is a four-hour, computer-scored, multiple-choice examination. It is a non-disclosed examination (no solutions are published and the question papers are to be collected at the writing centres). Students will not be permitted to bring any reference sources to the CKE.

The CKE is comprised of approximately 100 multiple-choice questions (MCQs). The MCQs are arranged by competency area in the same order as the UFE Candidates’ Competency Map (the Competency Map) * See Note. The midpoint of the range of marks allocated to each competency area are as follows:

Governance, Strategy and Risk Management  5%
Performance Measurement and Reporting25%
Assurance30%
Finance10%
Management Decision-Making15%
Taxation15%

Note:  The  UFE Candidates' Competency Map  is available for download.

Marks are not deducted for wrong answers. Students are required to achieve a minimum level of performance on the CKE not more than three years prior to the commencement of the School of Accountancy (SOA) in order to proceed to the SOA and/or attempt the related SOA examination. Generally, it is expected that about seventy-five to eighty per cent of those who attempt the examination will meet or exceed this standard.

Calculators:  Calculators are permitted provided they are silent calculators with single-line or two-line display, incapable of alpha storage and wireless communication. (Note: This means that all calculators with an alpha button will not be allowed.)

If your calculator does not meet the above standards it will be confiscated and a substitute calculator will not be provided.
