Staff Training FAQsWho needs to take the Staff Training Program? Staff Training (STP) is a mandatory requirement for registered CA Students. Students must take staff training either through their office’s in-house program or register in one of the Institute’s sponsored staff training sessions. However, students registered in the Other Ontario Accounting Designations, Accounting Body outside Canada or Transfer – Quebec categories are exempt from the staff training program requirement. I am registered as a University Graduate, when is my staff training deadline? Your deadline is within 16 months of your date of registration. This date will not be adjusted or extended. I am registered as a Co-operative student, when is my staff training deadline? Your deadline is 28 months commencing from the date of registration. This date will not be adjusted or extended. I am registered as a Conditional student, when is my staff training deadline? Students who are registered under the conditional registration category Regulation 6-1, s 5.9.2, who are employed in a CA Training Office on a part-time basis while attending university on a full-time basis will have 28 months commencing from the date of registration to complete the STP. The 28 months will not be adjusted or extended. Students who are registered under the conditional registration category Regulation 6-1, s 5.9.1, who are employed in a CA Training Office on a full-time basis while attending university on a part-time basis will have 16 months commencing from the date of registration to complete the STP. The 16 months will not be adjusted or extended. I am registered as a CA Student; however I currently do not have employment. Do I have a staff training deadline? Students who do not currently have employment, excluding the students registered under the employment exemption provision, are expected to meet the staff training requirement within 16 months of their date of registration. I am registered as a CA student under the employment exemption provision, do I have a staff training deadline? Yes, your deadline is 16 months from the date you find employment with a CA Training Office. How can I check when my CA student registration date was? You can check your CA student registration date, registration classification (i.e. university graduate or co-op student) and if your staff training is complete or incomplete by viewing your student record accessible through the Institute’s website: http://www.icao.on.ca/CAstudents/StudentRecord/1008page14813.aspx Your student registration date is also found on your student registration confirmation that was mailed to you when you first registered with the Institute and can be seen on your student profile when you either log in to pay your annual fees or register for an examination. What happens if I do not comply with staff training? A Student who has not completed the STP within the 16 or 28 months, commencing from their date of registration shall have their registration suspended. During the period of suspension, the Student shall have no rights or privileges of a Student, including writing examinations or attending the School of Accountancy. Experience completed during the period of suspension does not count towards the completion of the practical experience requirement. If the Student has employment the training office will be advised of the suspension. If I have been suspended for not complying with staff training, how do I get reinstated? A Student may reinstate their registration upon completion of the STP and providing proof of such completion to the Institute. Other requirements for reinstatement include receipt of the Employment Experience Certification Report Form, if applicable, indicating the experience break and any outstanding annual student renewal fees. The Student must also provide the Reinstatement Form 4-3A including a reinstatement fee, but must do so within twelve months of the date of suspension. What happens if I do not complete staff training within twelve months of the date of suspension? A suspended Student will be de-registered if the STP proof of completion, the updated Employment Experience Certification Report Form, the annual student renewal fee, and the reinstatement fee are not paid within twelve months of the date of suspension. The Registrar’s decision to deregister a Student may be appealed to the Membership Committee. How do I re-register as a CA Student if I have been de-registered? A Student de-registered for failing to complete the STP is not permitted to re-register as a Student and would be required to register as a “new” Student and to meet all of the requirements for registration in effect at the time of that registration. Prior completion of any educational requirements and the professional program components would be retained upon registration unless otherwise stated in Regulation 6-1. Under the current provisions of Regulation 6-1, the Student would only receive recognition for up to three months of experience completed prior to registration. Can I appeal the ICAO’s decision of my deregistration? Pursuant to Regulation 6-1, section 55, a decision to deregister a Student may be appealed to the Membership Committee. If you wish to appeal this decision, a written notice of appeal must be filed with Husniye Atas, Secretary to the Membership Committee, at the Institute within 30 days of this letter. The notice of appeal must set out the grounds for the appeal and the relief sought. The Membership Committee will consider an appeal in accordance with Rule 24 (Appeals) and Rule 25 (Membership Committee) of the Rules of Practice and Procedure. Those Rules, along with the Bylaws and Regulations, may be found in the ICAO Member’s handbook at http://www.icao.on.ca/Resources/Membershandbook/1011page5011.aspx. The decision of the Membership Committee is final. |
