July 12, 2004 – The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario (ICAO) announced today the winners of the seventh annual Ontario CA Challenge. The CA Challenge is a province-wide accounting competition designed for high school students considering a career as a Chartered Accountant. Developed by the Institute, the CA Challenge consists of 75 senior-level multiple-choice questions. Participants wrote the CA Challenge in May this year at over 50 CA firms in their respective areas. Over 2,500 students have sat the CA Challenge since its inception in 1998.
The four top placing students in Ontario are:
1st place (tied): Lionel Chow, Father Michael McGivney Catholic Academy, Markham
1st place (tied): Jack Snider, Waterloo Collegiate Institute, Waterloo
3rd place (tied): Katty Chau, Waterloo Collegiate Institute, Waterloo
3rd place (tied): Daisy Cheung, Earl Haig Secondary School, North York (Toronto)
"The Ontario CA Challenge is a highly popular Institute initiative to encourage students to pursue chartered accountancy as a profession," said Duane Soares, the Institute’s director of career information. "This year, 115 high schools across Ontario participated in the CA Challenge."
A total of 333 students sat for the 90-minute 2004 CA Challenge, with both provincial and regional winners announced today. The province-wide Ontario first and third place winners each receive $1,500 and $500 respectively, and the first place winner in each CA District Association receives $100. All writers of the CA Challenge receive a certificate and a congratulatory letter. A plaque honouring the top three students in each CA District is sent to respective schools for display with other awards.
Now celebrating the 125th anniversary of the CA profession, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario is the qualifying and regulatory body of Ontario’s 31,000 Chartered Accountants and 3,500 CA students. The Institute protects the public interest through the CA profession’s high standards of qualification and enforcement of its rules of professional conduct. The Institute’s website is www.icao.on.ca.
