Students win ¢OIN in Ontario CA challenge

 

Toronto, Ontario (June 14, 2005) – Students considering a bright looking future in the Chartered Accounting profession scored some impressive prizes in this year’s edition of ¢OIN: the Ontario CA Challenge. The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario held its annual competition on May 10 to give high school students considering a career as a Chartered Accountant the opportunity to compete, have fun and earn some cash prizes. The awards were presented to the top 20 students and their respective teachers at a luncheon at the Institute in Toronto June 14.

Today, the Institute announced the contest winners from across Ontario. The first place prize provincially is $1,500, with second place getting $1,000 and third collecting $500. There are also separate $100 prizes and certificates of achievement for the top students from the 19 competing CA District Associations across the province. In cases where students finished on top in their region and in the top 20 province-wide, they received $200. In the case of ties, both students receive the full prize money.

The Ontario-wide winners are:
• 1st Place All Ontario - Clara Sze-Man Choi, Father Michael McGivney Catholic Academy, Markham
• 2nd place All Ontario - Rokeni Anantharajah, Woburn Collegiate Institute, Scarborough
• 3rd place All Ontario - Edward Lucarelli, De La Salle College, Toronto

Regional District winners:
• 1st place Central District Association - TIE
• Randy Lake, Pine Ridge Secondary School, Pickering
• Shayla Brown, Dunbarton High School, Pickering
• 1st place Cochrane District Association – Matthew Corbeil, O’Gorman High School, South Porcupine
• 1st place Eastern District Association – TIE
• Keely Hutchison, Brockville Collegiate Institute, Brockville
• Katie Flynn, Brockville Collegiate Institute, Brockville
• 1st place Essex-Kent District Association – Ryan Meloche, St. Thomas of Villanova Secondary School, McGregor
• 1st place Etobicoke District Association – Ann Kang, Lakeshore Collegiate Institute
• 1st place Georgian Bay District Association – Adam Johnson, West Hill Secondary School, Owen Sound
• 1st place Halton-Peel District Association – Paul Jun, Gordon Graydon Memorial Secondary School, Mississauga
• 1st place Hamilton District Association – Alexandra Styczynski, Notre Dame Roman Catholic Secondary School, Burlington
• 1st place Lambton District Association – Andrew Jones, North Lambton Secondary School, Forest
• 1st place Niagara District Association – Jillian Watson, Laura Secord Secondary School, St. Catharines
• 1st place North Bay District Association – Mariah Craig, Chippewa Secondary School, North Bay
• 1st place North York District Association - Steven Zhang, A.Y. Jackson Secondary School
• 1st place Ottawa District Association - Nan Gai, Merivale High School, Nepean
• 1st place Scarborough District Association - Rokeni Anantharajah, Woburn Collegiate Institute
• 1st place Sudbury District Association - Keenan Chirka, Lockerby Composite School, Sudbury
• 1st place Toronto District Association - Edward Lucarelli, De La Salle College
• 1st place Waterloo District Association Menghan Yan, Centennial Collegiate, Guelph
• 1st place Western District Association - Stephen Palmer, Westminster Secondary School, London
• 1st place York District Association - Clara Sze-Man Choi, Father Michael McGivney Catholic Academy

To win, the students competed by answering 75-questions at the premises of a firm employing CAs. All of the participants receive a certificate of participation and a chance to find out more about the exciting opportunities offered by a career as a Chartered Accountant.
