Ottawa CA firms team up to beat hunger

Local Chartered Accountants support Ottawa Food Bank

Ottawa (June 17, 2008)
– Ottawa’s Chartered Accountants have successfully concluded the first of what promises to become an annual competition, the PwC Feed the City Competition to support the Ottawa Food Bank and local people in need. Six local firms signed up for the drive, which ran during late May and early June, and managed to collect 943 items and $11,745 in donations.

“Every year, the Ottawa Food Bank struggles to meet its demand for food and funding so that it can help the less fortunate,” said Firas Nasser, a CA student working at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) LLP and a key organizer of the food drive. “The summertime is especially difficult as the food bank receives fewer donations at that time of the year, although the need doesn’t decline.”

The need is great and growing. The Ottawa Food Bank helps an average of 40,000 people in the National Capital Region each month, 40 per cent of whom are children. That’s 11 tons of food every working day, everything from soup and cereal, to pasta and canned items. They also provide families with baby supplies and household cleaning and hygiene products.

To help generate interest in this new charitable initiative, the food drive was a competition. Firms competed to donate the greatest amount of food and money per capita, with Ginsberg Gluzman Fage & Levitz (GGFL) LLP taking first place thanks to generous donations of 145 items and $4,912. In addition to PwC and GGFL, other local firms taking part included Ernst & Young LLP, Collins Barrow, Welch & Co. LLP and Scott Rankin & Gardiner LLP.

“As Chartered Accountants, we’re committed to our community,” said Nasser. “This is our chance to give something back and help families across the National Capital Region.”
