Ontario CAs prepared almost 12,000 free tax returnsChartered Accountants have helped low-income earners in their communities since 1969
Toronto, Ontario (May 31, 2010) – For the 42nd year in a row, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario organized its annual Free CA Tax Clinics, which were offered at various times and locations across the province. This year, more than 1,600 Chartered Accountants (CAs) and CA students stepped up for the needy in their communities by preparing almost 11,800 tax returns for people in low-income brackets during tax season. Designed to serve low-income people who need help preparing tax returns, the Free CA Tax Clinics help people receive much-needed tax credits and refunds. Since the program was initiated, thousands of Ontarians have benefited from the volunteer tax-time help of the CAs. Today, the program is an ongoing partnership between over 200 community service groups that host the clinics and more than 2,500 volunteer Chartered Accountants and CA students who complete the returns free of charge. When they run between mid-February and the end of March, the Free CA Tax Clinics are open to those with total annual household incomes less than $25,000 with dependents and less than $17,000 with no dependents. The next clinics run during tax season in 2011. “The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario has been co-ordinating this valuable program since 1969,” said Donna Genova, Associate Director and Practice Advisor, Member Services at the Institute. “Our members find it gratifying to be able to give something back to the communities where they live and work.” - 30 - About the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario: For more information, please contact: |
