Dear Ontario CA Member:

We are writing to advise you of an important development in the ongoing discussions about unifying the Canadian accounting profession. At its Annual General Meeting, held this evening, CGA Ontario announced to its members that it has agreed to begin exploratory discussions with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario and CMA Ontario about the possibility of the three accountancy bodies merging in this province.

It’s important to note that CGA Ontario, in joining this discussion, has agreed with the eight overarching principles – developed jointly by the CAs and CMAs – that have been guiding this process from inception.

While we have just completed a consultation regarding the possibility of a two-way merger between the CA and CMA bodies, we’ve always left the door open – both nationally and provincially – for the CGAs to enter this discussion.

In fact, in Quebec, all three accountancy bodies are officially in merger talks that may lead to the creation of a new body and designation in that province.

In our months of consultations with members, many of you told us that to explore unifying the accounting profession in Canada would make much more sense with the CGAs participating in these discussions. In Ontario, we now have this opportunity to fully explore all the possibilities.

At this point, the CA and CMA bodies are reviewing the results of the past four months of consultation and a report will be issued shortly. We will continue to keep you, our members, informed of any new developments.

Sincerely,
